If you are looking for an interesting career in law, why not specialize in land use laws? There is a certain path you’ll need to follow to become an environmental lawyer. In the end, the rewards are tremendous and the job is fascinating. You’ll, of course, need to be a college graduate and enrolled in law school in order to become this type of lawyer.
Once you have completed your bachelor’s degree, make sure that you find a reputable law school that offers a broad range of subjects dealing with all aspects of law. In addition to your regular law courses, try to enroll in environmentally focused courses as well. It’s also a great idea to try to get into some type of program where you can obtain actual experience working with a seasoned lawyer out in the field. Obtain a coveted clerkship position in an established law firm if at all possible.
In addition to maintaining a high grade point average, join some law associations as well. It never hurts to network well ahead of graduation – get your name known and you will have an easier time finding a job in the field of land use laws. Keep informed about all of the current environmental laws and become familiar with potential laws that are currently being considered.
When you have completed the required courses of study and have graduated from law school, take a state board exam (and pass it!) Be diligent in your job search and do everything you can to sell yourself to the right law firm. If you received stellar grades in school, don’t be afraid to let your potential employer know what you accomplished. Let it be known that you are highly interested the environment and all of the laws that protect it. Make sure that your cover letter and resume are professional and include all appropriate information relating to the job you are applying for.
One great place to look for employment in the area of environmental law is with the federal government. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hires many lawyers to oversee the many programs that are set up to make sure that our environment remains as pristine as possible. The government is a great place to work because its primary job is to make sure that our country is kept intact for everyone.
Finally, become as well informed as possible about land use laws in general. Look at the many acts that are out there and read them well so that you have a sound understanding of what they are intended to do. Join the American Bar Association and subscribe to as many legal publications as possible.
